Overview

Out of the Toy Box is a joyful celebration of the act of play, as told through the lens of renowned toy photographer Mitchel Wu. The exhibit is housed in the smART Space at Science Museum Oklahoma, an art gallery that aims to showcase the wonder that occurs when the fields of art and science collide. Featuring 55 of Wu’s favorite images from throughout his career, as well as a collection of dioramas, behind the scenes videos, and notes from the artist, the exhibit brings Wu’s creative process to life and invites visitors to join in on the fun through an interactive photo studio equipped with toys and pre-constructed dioramas.

How We Helped

Ghost developed a playful, dynamic identity for the exhibit, designed to evoke the same childlike wonder as Wu’s images. The brand system utilizes basic shapes as building blocks that are combined to build the exhibit’s signature geometric pattern, as well as the letterforms of the word mark itself. A palette of bright, chromatic colors and their corresponding tints complements the exhibit’s playful subject matter while providing depth and variety for pattern applications. Exhibition graphics pair a friendly slab serif typeface with a dynamic geometric sans set in variable widths that appear to morph, stretch, and bounce off the walls.

Out of the Toy Box

For this exhibit, Wu created a one-of-a-kind diorama and print featuring the Museum’s exterior. Titled “Out Of The Toy Box,” the image features lifelike toy dinosaurs roaming the grounds of Science Museum Oklahoma. The miniature museum model, meticulously crafted by miniature diorama artist and set designer Tracy Ealdama, enhances the illusion of the dinosaurs’ enormous size. Ghost designed custom posters featuring the image for Science Museum Oklahoma’s Science Shop, as well as invitations for the exhibit’s opening reception.
